Doug Newell is founder and Managing Director of Calexus Solutions. He is a successful serial entrepreneur with over 33 years’ experience leading major analytic and systems integration efforts.
Doug has been recognized as an innovator in the world of analytics and a pioneer in the
application of machine learning technologies and imbedded analytics. He and his teams have provided novel solutions to challenges in marketing, healthcare, site selection, risk management, fraud detection, and asset valuation.
In 1998 Doug founded Genalytics, Inc., (now Semcasting) a developer of automated analytic software. Its core genetic algorithm based data mining software has been licensed by the majority of major US financial services organizations and is now being applied to “Big Data” health care analytics.
Prior to founding Genalytics, Doug was a Founder and Vice President of Quantitative
Solutions and Management Consulting for Tessera Enterprise Systems. He was also the
Founder and General Manager of the firm’s successful European subsidiary, Tessera GmbH. Tessera and Tessera GmbH provided systems integration services to large retailers, brokerages, insurance companies and banks such as UBS Bank in Zurich.
Earlier in his career, Doug served as Vice President of Analytics and Consulting for the High-Performance Computing Division of Epsilon Data Management/American Express. While at Epsilon, Doug established the Epsilon Analytic Consulting Group. This organization grew to become one of the direct marketing industry’s largest and most capable analytic teams.
Doug Newell earned a degree in economics from Washington and Lee University, and an
MBA from the College of William and Mary. Despite hating snow and winter, Doug and his family have lived in New Hampshire for 30 years where his Russian Wolfhounds (who do like snow and winter) take Doug out for an exciting run every morning.
Director of Analytics
René is a strategic thinker and creative problem-solver. Her insights are drawn from a broad range of industry experience including marketing, aviation, information services, software, publishing, insurance, and retail. Her ideas and analyses have made a valuable impact at Genalytics, Sentient Jet, Alpha Flying, Oracle Corporation, OneSource Information Services, among others. She uses statistical techniques such as predictive modeling, customer segmentation and campaign response analysis to identify business opportunities and generate actionable results. She has an MBA from Bentley University with a concentration Business Analytics and a BS from Tufts University. In her free time, Renee can often be found enjoying the New England scenery from above while piloting a small airplane or glider.
Director of Internet Analytics
Chris Barrett is the Director of Internet Analytics at Calexus Solutions, where he is responsible for creating and implementing innovative solutions for Calexus’ Internet clients. Prior to coming to Calexus, Chris has honed his skills working in both the tech start-up and agency sectors. In 2009, he moved back to New Hampshire to join Calexus Solutions. Since then he has utilized Calexus’ proprietary predictive technology in new directions including ad targeting optimization, search engine marketing, and re-targeting look-alike modeling for Internet advertisers. He led the Calexus team in the development of our Embedded Analytics products which provide real-time scoring to Internet leads and offer direction to real-time content management. Chris has a degree in Marketing from Bentley University. Outside of the office Chris enjoys a very active lifestyle; skiing, running, and hiking. He is currently working on his Scuba Certification and learning to Hang Glide, both of which worry his boss.
Richard Evans specializes in data management in practical business situations. His consulting experience in the field spans many different environments, from small start-up operations to major corporate projects. As the president of Alwoodley Associates he built a reputation for the consistent delivery and reliable implementation of systems solutions for traditional retail and manufacturing environments. Later, as a partner with The Context Group, he focused on developing forecasting and sourcing techniques to address problems associated with highly volatile demand streams in supply chains. In addition to his work with supply chains, he has deployed his mathematical background in developing innovative techniques and high speed algorithms for such diverse applications as weather insurance premiums, rating high volume telephony traffic and the design of rules-based engines for the operation of automatic mail insertion equipment. Mr. Evans has also worked as a consultant in the MIS field with Kurt Salmon Associates, as a Director of MIS with Grieco Brothers Tailored Clothing in Massachusetts, and as an account executive with Burroughs Machines (now Unisys) in Europe. Mr. Evans received a B.A. (1st Honors) in Mathematics from the University of York in England. Since 1984 he has based his practice in New Hampshire where he has been an elected member of a local school board and a frequent contributor of articles on education reform.
Dr. Russell Walker is co-founder and Chief Analytics Officer of Calexus Solutions LLC. Most recently Russell served as Senior Strategist, Strategic Technology Group at Capital One Financial, where he founded and led the New Decision Paradigms research program to provide novel credit risk modeling, rules engines, and data mining techniques to the enterprise. In this position Russell, co-lead the High Performance Computing research program which evaluated and deployed grid computing and distributed storage techniques to reduce IT expenses and enable increased analytics. At Capital One, Russell also led the creation of the first-ever Analytics Testing Lab and oversaw the development of a next generation analytics environment. These efforts resulted in projects estimated to save $60M in improved credit risk decisions. Russell’s projects earned the Corporate Award for Excellence from the CEO on two projects. Russell also founded the Capital One Center of Excellence for Simulation and Modeling. This resulted in projects that enabled over $40M in improved operations and reduced operational risks. During his time at Capital One, Russell helped re-engineer internal processes for collections, risk, and fraud mitigation. These provided over $14M in savings and income and reduced operational risks. He also evaluated enterprise-core systems such as system of account record, credit risk modeling algorithms, fraud, customer retention, and collection decision engines and provided recommendations to senior executives on regulatory compliance. He also was the lead technology strategist on efforts to redesigned risk-model scoring and development environments for the US and UK businesses. Russell is an adjunct faculty member at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University, where he serves as Assistant Director of the Zell Center for Risk Management and is developing new curriculum in risk management and the use of analytics in marketing. He also participates in the Kellogg Entrepreneurial Center and the Innovation Network, advising start-up companies. Russell is an internationally recognized speaker, regularly speaking at leading business schools across the globe, such as the Kellogg School of Management, IESE Business School in Barcelona, Spain, the Johnson School of Business at Cornell University, the Darden School of Management at the University of Virginia, and the Stern School of Business at the New York University. Russell has an MBA from Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University, a PhD and M.S. from Cornell University and a B.S. from the University of South Florida. His studies have focused on Risk Analysis, Operations Research, Decision Analysis, and Applied Statistics.
Dominique Haughton (PhD MIT 1983) is Professor of Mathematical Sciences and Global Studies at Bentley University in Waltham, Massachusetts, near Boston, and Affiliated Researcher at the Université Toulouse 1, France. Major areas of interest are business analytics, applied statistics, the analysis of living standards surveys, data mining, and model selection. She is the coordinator for the graduate Business Analytics concentration at Bentley University. Editor-in-chief of Case Studies in Business, Industry and Government Statistics (CSBIGS). Over fifty articles have appeared in journals such as The American Statistician, Computational Statistics and Data Analysis, Economic Development and Cultural Change, Studies in Family Planning, Journal of Population Economics, Journal of Biosocial Science, Annals of Statistics, Sankhya, Journal of Statistical Computation and Simulation, Communications in Statistics, Statistica Sinica.
Chief Data Modeler
Abhishek Bhatt is Calexus’ Chief Data Modeler. Most recently he constructed a B2B Fortune 500 company’s CRM database. That database is managed here at Calexus. Abhi also designed and executed a general purpose analytic data extract system. His work takes him across Calexus’ client base helping account teams turn “Big Data” into bigger opportunities for our clients. Abhi was awarded a degree in Physics by Washington & Lee University and has studied in Asia, Europe and South America. When not manipulating complex data Abhi likes to cook in the style of his native Nepal … it makes your hair sweat.
Retail Account Manager
Jerzy Kessler specializes in developing practical solutions to a diverse range of retail challenges. His analyses have answered important questions in support of retail marketing, operations, and finance. He is skilled at presenting complex statistical findings in formats that can be easily understood by non-technical middle and senior management professionals. In his free time, Jerzy is an avid skier and golfer, but can be found most weekends at Mohegan Sun Casino successfully applying his analytic skills to Texas Hold’em.
Vassil Vodenski is an analyst at Calexus. He applies his broad knowledge of numerous programming and statistical manipulation languages in support of Calexus’ client teams. Like others here at Calexus he has exceptional abilities in the analysis of “Big Data”. Vassil has studied in Europe, in the Pacific and has earned a degree in Physics-Engineering from Washington & Lee University in Virginia. Besides the many computer languages Vassil also speaks four people languages.
